Film Review: Chander Pahar (Mountain of the Moon)Stunning African locations and wildlife almost compensate for clumsy storytelling in Chander Pahar (Mountain of the Moon), an ambitious adaptation of a Bengali novel. Fans of "Tollywood" star Dev will turn out in droves to watch him wrestle with lions, snakes and elephants, but the movie will have trouble attracting a wider audience. Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay wrote his 1. The journey that Shankar completes in Chander Pahar is an epic one. Starting from Mombasa, in what is now Kenya, he travels through countries in Central Africa, South. Africa, and his story has some of the wide- eyed innocence of Karl May's German novels about the Wild West. In the early years of the 2. · Chander Pahar (Bengali: চাঁদের পাহাড়, English: Mountain of the Moon) is a Bengali adventure novel written by Bibhutibhushan.Shankar Chowdhury (Dev) abandons a career in a Bengali jute mill to journey to Mombasa, at the time part of British Kenya, where a cousin has promised him a job. Shankar finds himself manning an isolated train station that's beset by dangerous wildlife. A friend visiting from neighboring mines is carried off by a lion, and Shankar himself is almost killed by a mamba. While patrolling his grounds, Shankar rescues Diego Alvarez (Gérard Rudolf) from cheetahs and hyenas. As he recovers from his wounds, Alvarez tells Shankar of his travels with the explorer Jim Carter (Cito Martin Otto). The pair followed the notes of Italian explorer Attilio Gatti (Andrew Stock), who told of a mountain cave filled with gold and diamonds. As they neared their goal, Carter was killed by the bloodthirsty Bunyip, leaving Alvarez to make his way home alone. Shankar and Alvarez set off by themselves to find the Mountain of the Moon, a journey that takes them through jungles, across lakes, and up mountain cliffs. Along the way they meet natives and colonial settlers, encounter a volcano, and come face- to- face with the Bunyip, a beast often thought to be imaginary. Based on the popular Bengali novel, Chander Pahar, Mountain of the Moon is a feature film starring Indian actor Dev along with local talent such as Gerard Rudolph and. Dev, the screen name for Deepak Adhikari, is consistently appealing as Shankar, a character prone to bad decisions throughout the story. The other actors, including South African veteran Rudolf, do well with roles that are a bit too broadly written. By trying to stay faithful to the original novel, director and screenwriter Kamaleswar Mukherjee may have sabotaged the film. Much of what happens here is hard to swallow, from Shankar outrunning lions and scaling sheer rock faces to an attack by a pride of elephants that is never resolved. As a director, Mukherjee aims for broad, emphatic gestures, whether or not they advance the story. Scenes are dragged out to exhausting lengths, and the editing during action sequences is set to "overkill." (In one case, it takes nine shots and three camera set- ups for Shankar to jump over a branch.) The location cinematography is a big asset, but special effects are noticeably poor, in particular a volcanic eruption that looks like Roman candles and the Bunyip, a blue, obese cartoon figure. Chander Pahar (2. IMDb. Edit. Chander Pahar is the journey to the fabled, 'Mountain Of The Moon', in search of gold and diamond mines, up against threats as vivid and varied as lurking snakes, pouncing lions, poisonous flora, the fury of an active volcano and a seemingly, almost supernatural mythical horror 'The Bunyip' the guardian angel of the diamond cave. However it is also the story of grit and determination, a story of following one's dream against all odds and emerging victorious, a story about a young lad called Shankar who faced with the prospect of having to make a living as a factory worker in his impoverished village, bids farewell to his family in Keutia, Rural Bengal and through his aid Prasad Das Banopadhay who happens to work for the Uganda railway head office sets sail to the Dark Continent to work as the station master in Nakuru station, it's a dream come true for Shankar who has always envisioned himself as a Expeditionary and holds good knowledge in world geography and map reading.
